Downtown Cleveland to Star in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers

Motorists and pedestrians advised of road closures, intermittent traffic delays, and alternate routes

CLEVELAND, OH – During the month of August Downtown Cleveland will be transformed into a movie set for Marvel Studio’s The Avengers, which will require road closures, intermittent traffic delays and alternate routes for motorists and pedestrians. On August 8, 2011, E. 9th Street from Euclid Avenue to Prospect Avenue will close until September 2, 2011. Additional streets will be closed during the month of August.

The Division of Traffic & Engineering and the Public Safety Department, has been working with the production company as well as a traffic-engineering consultant to accommodate the needs of the film. City crews will adjust traffic patterns to accommodate other closures scheduled throughout the production and will implement parking restrictions as needed. Signage for alternate routes will be posted. The city staff is aware of traffic pattern changes due to the Innerbelt project and will make the necessary adjustments to key locations where it is anticipated traffic will increase due to the detours.

The following alternate routes, estimated dates and times of implementation have been designed to help alleviate traffic congestion that will occur due to road closures and accommodate the intermittent traffic delays caused by the temporary closure of intersections. Due to the nature of filming, these dates are subject to change once production begins.

Entire intersections below will be closed on the following dates:

  • Monday Aug 15 – Prospect Avenue closed at E. 9th Street
  • Tuesday Aug 16 – Euclid Avenue closed at E. 9th Street
  • Wednesday Aug 17 – Euclid Avenue closed at E. 9th Street
  • Thursday Aug 18 – Prospect Avenue closed at E. 9th Street
  • Friday Aug 19 – Prospect Avenue closed at E. 9th Street
  • Saturday Aug 20 – Euclid Avenue closed at E. 9th Street
  • Monday Aug 22 & Tuesday Aug 23 – Euclid Avenue may be closed at E. 9th Street depending on what work is left from previous week

Additionally, intermittent Closures (traffic will be stopped for short periods of time) will occur at the following intersections from August 8 to September 2:

  • East 9th Street and Prospect
  • East 9th Street and Walnut
  • Superior and West Roadway

The Walt Disney Studios/Marvel production is the largest feature film to ever shoot in Ohio and will employ hundreds of Ohio-based cast and crew, and use local service and supply vendors
