CLEVELAND, OH – A diverse group of urban youths will display their budding ice-skating skills at the annual ice show at historic Halloran Park Skating Rink at 6 p.m. this evening Friday, January 21.
More than 75 costumed kids will skate to familiar songs of the silver screen in a show entitled “3-2-1 Action! Hollywood on Ice!”
Most of the skaters are beginners or novices from the richly diverse West Side neighborhoods around the landmark Halloran Park rink, at 3550 W. 117th St. These skaters have been rehearsing for the show’s group and solo performances since November, with choreography and instruction from the rink’s staff expert, Mallory Daney.
The ice show has been an annual event since 2008. According to co-organizer Beverly Moreno of the Halloran Skating Club, production quality will improve noticeably this year thanks to funding from Neighborhood Connections, a grassroots small-grants and community-building program affiliated with the Cleveland Foundation. The grant has allowed the club to buy costumes, decorations, and props, and provide high-quality lighting and sound.
“We wanted to make it big for the kids and get them excited, as a sort of reward for all their hard work in practice,” said Moreno.
The Neighborhood Connections grant (www.neighborhoodgrants.org) is also funding skates and helmets for the club’s new speed-skating program for kids.
Halloran Park’s 52-year-old outdoor rink is Cleveland’s only ice-skating facility with a full shed roof which allows it to operate regardless of weather.
