CLEVELAND, OH – Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson welcomes H.E. Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, the Ambassador of Italy to the United States; Achille Variati, Mayor of Vicenza and a delegation from Vicenza Italy, Cleveland’s sister city.
Several meetings were held today, to focus on the importance of business connections between Italy and the Midwest. This work continues tomorrow, Thursday, April 7, 2011 with a panel discussion and a luncheon, among other meetings and events. Mayor Jackson will provide remarks at the start of the Panel Discussion and attend the luncheon where he will be Knighted by the Ambassador of Italy.
About Ambassador Terzi
Ambassador Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata assumed his duties as Ambassador of Italy to the United States on October 1st, 2009. He was previously Italy’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations where he also headed the Italian Delegation to the Security Council, which Italy had joined as non permanent member for the 2007-2008 term.
Afghanistan, humanitarian intervention and protection of civilians in armed conflicts, were among the major issues Ambassador Terzi focused on during his presence on the Council. Prior to his New York assignment, Ambassador Terzi served in the Foreign Ministry in Rome as Deputy Secretary General, Director General for Multilateral Political Affairs and Human Rights, and Political Director.
His most recent overseas posting was as Ambassador of Italy to Israel (2002-2004), a period characterized by the outbreak of the Second Intifada. Ambassador Terzi has been with the Italian foreign ministry since 1975. Born in Bergamo, Giulio Terzi earned a degree in Law at the University of Milan, specializing in International Law.
