Root Cafe

Cleveland Lifestyle News

Have you ever got bored with the same brand of coffee and want to discover a new coffee shop? Root Cafe is a friendly cafe in Lakewood, Ohio where you can find art, coffee, tea, food, and the general energy of Lakewood. The Root has a vegan and vegetarian menu selling mostly all organic baked goods. The Root put down roots here and quickly became one of Lakewood’s favorite coffee shops. co-owner Julie Hutchison has been part of the journey since 1999.

In a city as dense as Lakewood, a lot of people love organic, vegan, and vegetarian places. There are plenty of places to eat in Lakewood that are vegan and vegetarian friendly, but not many coffee shops. The Root empowers people with a different eating style than their friends to be able to get outside and have plenty of options. “The Root makes its own vegan cheese and vegan nut milk,” says Hutchison.

The Root sells a variety of products including salads, taco salads, hummus and zucchini. In addition to food, The Root also sells coffee, lattes and teas. Cafe menu includes: Drip, Pour Over, Iced Coffee, Toddy coffee, Cafe au Lait, Chai, Teas or Tisanemany. Hutchison recommends his favorite nut milk cortado. For those wondering, The Root gets its coffee from Duck-Rabbit Coffee and Rising Star Espresso.

Many may wonder how The Root got to where it is today? Hutchison has a background in Arabica and previously owned the Phoenix Coffee Company. Hutchison has also co-owned The Root since 1999. She told the Lakewood Times: “I took over running this cafe when I was 21 because the owner didn’t want to get involved anymore and couldn’t sell it. I was a manager at the time and had a contract to take on the business’s debts, but I only paid $1.” The future looks bright for The Root as Hutchison says, “We can continue to serve Cleveland with quality food and possibly open other places to serve more communities.”

The Roots reviews are nothing but fluttering colors, with many people enjoying the environment and all it has to offer. Mckenna Hunt, a student at Lakewood High School, says: “I love going to The Root! It’s so beautiful inside and they have the best pastries!”
